Philadelphia, MS – Philadelphia Elementary School is proud to announce that fifth-grade student MJ Spurlock has been elected president of the Mississippi State Elementary Beta Club. Spurlock’s victory follows a successful campaign centered around this year’s Beta theme, “Beta: Radiate,” and his slogan, “Radiate and Rock – I always wanted a PRESIDENT just like you.” He was elected by his peers in a statewide vote, marking a significant accomplishment for the young student and his school.
“This is a tremendous achievement for MJ,” said Ulissa Coburn, the PES Beta sponsor. “We are extremely proud of him and his classmates who worked side by side to create the slogan and campaign skit. MJ’s hard work, dedication, integrity, goodwill, and creativity are qualities that will make him a great leader, not just in Beta but in life.”
Spurlock’s role as president will see him represent Philadelphia Elementary School and the state of Mississippi at the National Beta Convention in Orlando, Florida, this June. While there, he will campaign for the position of national president, furthering his leadership journey.
Dr. Whitehead, Superintendent of Education for the district, expressed her excitement for Spurlock’s achievement. “MJ’s election as president of the Mississippi State Elementary Beta Club is a reflection of his hard work and the exceptional support he receives from his teachers and classmates,” said Dr. Whitehead. “We are incredibly proud of him and are confident he will continue to shine as a leader both in the Beta Club and beyond. This is a wonderful accomplishment for MJ, his family, and our school community.”
The Beta Club is a national organization dedicated to recognizing students for their academic achievement, leadership qualities, and character. It encourages growth through service, camaraderie, and community involvement. The National Beta Convention includes three divisions: Elementary Beta for grades 4-5, Junior Beta for grades 6-8, and Senior Beta for grades 9-12.
